<<<Jesse Peter “Is he any good?” Ash, Sound Designer.
For SideMart: The Apartment Plays, Haunted Hillbilly, Oooo!, The Mark of All Genius, Trying for the Kingdom.
Hi. My name is Jesse, but in SideMart, I usually go by Jay-Pash. I first worked with the grocers by hanging around with my old NTS pal, Sarah after shows. Eventually they let me do stuff. But I do other stuff too. When I was 17 I moved to Ontario and went through audio recording school (OIART), then worked as a technician, TD, and Head of Sound in New Brunswick, before attending National Theatre School of Canada in 2004. In 2007 I was asked to assist Peter McBoyle at the Stratford Festival. I’ve returned every season since, no longer assisting. I have designed Sound for The Grand Theatre (London ON), many companies in Montreal, and internationally with Robert Wilson. I also play in a band, Reversing Falls, write songs (not very well), attempt to make “Sound Art”, and often help on Music Recordings, mix sound for live music, and act as Chef Son for Circuit-Est Centre Choreographique. I also teach and coach sound at the NTSC as of 2009. I’m from New Brunswick and wish I could see my family more often as I miss them very much.

I have a lot of nicknames, but my realnon-nickname is Kyle Gatehouse. I met Andrew Shaver over kangaroo steak in the restaurant of a five star hotel during a commercial shoot for Suzuki trucks, and have been close guys with him ever since. We both agreed the steak was “gamey” and “tasted like a barn”.
I met Graham Cuthbertson doing improv years ago, a meeting neither of us remembers. I only discovered this fact years later after watching a videotape of the show that my Dad had shot on his old Panasonic Camcorder.
I was in Pre-Intervention (written by Graham, it wasn’t really a SideMart thing but look, I put it anyway) and most recently Trying For The Kingdom, which I co-created with Patrick and Gemma (Jesse, Sarah and this other girl Carly also were involved and I guess so was Andrew and maybe Graham).
I’m an actor who lives in Montreal and I’ve done a number of other shows and films and stuff.

I’m super proud of my association with Sidemart, with whom I’ve worked on, Dishwashers, Oooo! and I’m sure there was something else. Other plays you might have seen me in include, A Moon For the Misbegotten, Long Days Journey into Night, and Oliver at Centaur. I also worked at The Banff Centre, The Citadel, The Manitoba Theatre Centre and The Stratford Festival. Recent television shows include the French language crime drama Le Negotiateur, the English language police drama Tripping the Wire , the CBC hockey comedy, The Tournament , CBCs award winning court dramedy This Is Wonderland as well as The Dead Zone, and most recently as the pram stoned dad Phil Hill on CBCs comedy 18 to Life.

My name is Gemma James-Smith. People call me “Geej” or other more exotic names. I have worked with SideMart on several projects as a performer and sometimes-writer. I’m from Calgary originally – I left there to go attempt an education at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. Some other companies that this gal has worked with: Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, One Yellow Rabbit (Calgary) Nightwood Theatre, Factory Theatre (Toronto), Centaur Theatre, Segal Centre for the Arts, Scapegoat Carnivale (Montreal), and The Montgomery Theatre (PEI). Also, I am a workshop assistant for Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes – which is something i really enjoy.

I went to theatre school with Graham Cuthbertson. Sometimes I would invite him to work with me, sometimes he would invite me to work with him. Graham thought I would make a good host for the SideMart Shortlist, a collection of short theatre pieces that no one remembers or talks about. Since then, I have had the opportunity to contribute to two more of SideMart’s least-critically acclaimed productions. It’s fun when you have friends that are smart and talented.
